REC to Help Host Second Girl Power Camp
Wednesday | November 30, 2022

Connecting more women with the energy industry has been an industry-wide goal over the past few years, particularly the field of line work. REC is proud to co-host the Virginia, Maryland, Delaware Association of Electric Cooperative’s (VMDAEC) Girl Power camp on Friday, Dec. 2. The camp will provide approximately 40 young women from across the state with hands-on opportunities to experience careers in the power industry.

The one-day energy career experience is for high school girls interested or curious about working on a line crew, in a substation, as a drone pilot, with advanced metering technology or as a fiber broadband technician. Instructors will lead students through various activities in the classroom and outdoors at the VMDAEC’s state-of-the-art training facility in Palmyra, Va. Campers will learn about safety on the job, including how to safely climb a utility pole and operate a bucket truck.

“It’s important that we continue to diversify these types of operations roles, so we’re incredibly proud to support the Girl Power camp for a second year,” said Casey Hollins, Managing Director – Communications and Public Relations.

Students will also individually meet with industry human resources professionals to review their resumes and discuss interviewing best practices. Other representatives will be available to answer questions about career paths and workplace culture.

Along with REC, several partners have helped make this event possible, including Milwaukee Tool, Altec, Tyndale, Davey Resource Group, Bradley Electro, Lekson & Associates, Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, and Northern Neck Electric Cooperative.
