Brian Doherty Selected as Managing Director – External Affairs

Brian Doherty has joined REC as Managing Director - External Affairs. In this role, he will oversee and direct all activities related to the Cooperative’s rates and regulatory affairs, state and federal government affairs, and economic development.   

Among other duties, Doherty and his staff will lead REC’s participation in proceedings before the Virginia State Corporation Commission, work with state and federal legislators on policies and laws that protect the interests of REC’s diverse membership, and work with state, regional and local officials to attract new businesses to REC’s service area.  

Doherty is an experienced energy regulatory affairs and policy professional. He has significant experience in utility regulation, regulatory policy development and analysis, and rate setting.   

Prior to joining REC, Doherty served as Manager of Regulatory Affairs at the Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco), where he directed Pepco’s regulatory activities in the District of Columbia. Before joining Pepco, Doherty was a utility regulator, serving as an economist for the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia. Prior to that, he was a consultant for the IBM Corporation.

Doherty holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the College of William & Mary and is a native of Roanoke, Virginia.
