Member Value
As an REC member, you help guide how we are powering value for you and for the communities we serve.
Being a member-owner of REC means more than receiving electric service. It means access to tools, programs and financial benefits designed to help you manage costs and improve your quality of life.
In 2025, REC programs like Summer Savings Plan, paperless billing and energy efficiency tools gave members practical ways to lower bills and better understand their energy use. Expanded digital tools and improved communication channels also made it easier to manage accounts, access information and get support when needed.
REC works proactively to protect members from rising energy costs. As a member of Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC), REC benefits from a stable and diverse power supply. While wholesale power costs rose nearly 50 percent across the PJM* region from 2024 to 2025, REC reduced the impact on members by leveraging ODEC's mix of generation resources, including natural gas, nuclear, coal, wind and solar. This balanced approach helps stabilize costs and limits the effects of market volatility on members' bills.
As a not-for-profit cooperative, any margins are returned to members, not shareholders. When revenue exceeds the cost of providing service, it is returned to members as capital credits. In 2025, REC returned $8.1 million to members, delivering a significant direct financial benefit. REC also responds to evolving member needs with practical, trusted solutions. Through Vividly Brighter, members can work with trusted experts for energy advice, electrician services, and whole-home generator and EV charger installations. These offerings are designed to help members make wise energy choices and improve their quality of life.
REC's commitment extends to the communities members call home. In 2025, REC supported more than 400 community events. The Cooperative and its employees gave back more than $376,000 to local communities through corporate donations and sponsorships, employee giving, scholarships and the annual Youth Tour.
Through The Power of Change, members voluntarily round up their bills to support local nonprofits. In 2025, those small contributions, averaging just over 50 cents per member each month, generated $237,000 in grants to 71 non-profit organizations across REC's 22-county service territory. By pooling together member's donations and thoughtfully reviewing the needs, REC helped power significant change in our area, from feeding the hungry, to supporting veterans, to helping fund new equipment for first responders and much more.
Member value is the result of intentional actions that deliver reliable service, meaningful savings, trusted support and stronger communities through a model built to serve its members. In the end, member value is measured by real impact, lower costs, dependable service and tangible benefits that improve life for members and the communities they care about.
*PJM is a regional transmission organization that coordinates the flow of electricity and runs wholesale power markets at 13 states, including Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
