Help Rappahannock Electric Cooperative Hold Down the Cost of Power
Wednesday | July 17, 2019

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) wants member-owners to know they have the power to hold down the cost of electricity – keeping their energy bills as low as possible. Beginning today and continuing through this weekend, REC is asking member-owners to minimize their energy use to help reduce the demand for electricity.

“When the demand for energy is high, the cost of electricity goes up,” explained Tom Handley, director of regulatory affairs for REC. “Peak days and hours are times that we expect energy use to be high, so we share ways members can reduce their energy use from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.”

Energy use peaks during the hours of 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Every day the remainder of this week, REC offers the following suggestions for ways members can reduce energy use during those hours:

  • Raise the thermostat to 78 degrees or higher.
  • Wait until later in the evening to use hot water.
  • Limit the use of heat-generating electronics including gaming systems.
  • Cook on the grill instead of with the stove or oven.

“When members work together to reduce energy, they keep the cost of electricity as low as possible,” Handley added.

REC sends out notifications to members for these peak days via email, social media, and MyREC SmartHub. Do your part to help Beat the Peak!
