Four area high school students represented REC during the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. The annual weeklong event is hosted by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). REC delegates were Lincoln Stuart of Eastern View High School in Culpeper County, Adrian Keyser of Chancellor High School in Spotsylvania County, Maia Parks of Millbrook High School in Frederick County and Noreen Ndonde of Albemarle High School in Albemarle County.
These delegates joined more than 1,800 students from across the nation for a fast-paced and inspiring week focused on leadership, civic engagement and learning about the electric cooperative business model. The program gave participants a chance to experience the nation’s capital through a new lens, even for those who had visited before.
“Before Youth Tour, Washington, D.C., was just something I learned about in class. Being there in person, meeting new people and hearing different perspectives made everything feel real. I came home with new friendships, more confidence and a better understanding of how I can make a difference,” said Noreen Ndonde, who was selected to represent Virginia on the Youth Leadership Council.
Another student shared similar excitement about the experience, noting the value of meeting peers from across the country while gaining a deeper understanding of how government and cooperatives work together to serve communities.
The experience began with students quickly diving into leadership training and orientation alongside peers from multiple states. Throughout the week, students visited national landmarks, educational institutions and historical sites. Highlights included standing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, meeting with congressional staff, taking a cruise along the Potomac River and visiting Mount Vernon.
“Programs like Youth Tour are a great way for students to see firsthand how their communities are connected to civic life and how electric cooperatives work behind the scenes to serve members,” said Casey Hollins, Managing Director – Communications and Public Relations. “REC is proud to help provide opportunities that broaden perspectives and support the next generation of leaders.”
Applications for the 2027 Youth Tour will open in September. Rising high school seniors whose parents or guardians are member-owners of REC are eligible to apply. Students can learn more about the program at myrec.coop/youthtour.
