Prepare Now for Storm-Related Outages
Monday | August 3, 2020

REC crews stand ready to respond to any storm-related outages as Tropical Storm Isaias continues to barrel toward Virginia. Member-owners are urged to prepare now, as well.

The brunt of the storm is expected to arrive overnight and continue through Tuesday afternoon, dropping 3 to 5 inches of rain and bringing wind gusts of 40-plus mph in some areas.

"REC's line crews, contractors and vegetation management team members are all mobilized and prepared to repair equipment, clear any downed trees and restore service as quickly and safely as possible," said Casey Hollins, director of communications and public relations. "However, with the intensity of this storm, we urge member-owners to prepare for the possibility of an extended power outage."

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, many of us have already stocked up on essential items, but review what you have on hand to ensure you are prepared for an outage. Charge critical electronics such as cell phones before the storms arrive, and make sure your family has a flashlight with batteries. Additionally, if you see our crews restoring power in your area, please remember to practice social distancing and to stay at least 20 feet away.

Other steps you can take now:

  • Bookmark REC’s website to report an outage or to find the latest on restoration efforts. You also can sign up to receive Outage Text Alertsmyrec.coop/outagecenter.
  • Remember that you can use your smart phone to report an outage at myrec.coop/out. You also can report an outage in MyREC SmartHub.
  • If someone in your home requires electricity for a serious medical condition, identify an alternate location with power should you need to rely on it during an outage.
