REC Brings Free Family Fun to Ashland with Sponsorship of Summer Movie Series
Wednesday | July 23, 2025

Families in Ashland are enjoying free summer entertainment thanks to REC, which is proudly sponsoring Ashland Theatre’s “Free Movie Mondays” series through Aug. 11. Traditionally known as "$2 Movie Mondays," the weekly movie showings have become a beloved community tradition. This year, with REC’s support, the Theatre is offering the movies completely free of charge. Screenings take place each Monday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., offering family-friendly films in the heart of Ashland.

“Supporting local communities and enriching the lives of our member-owners is at the heart of REC’s mission,” said Casey Hollins, Managing Director – Communications and Public Relations at REC. “We are proud to partner with Ashland Theatre to provide accessible summer activities for families, especially during the hottest months of the year.”

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with hundreds attending each week.

“We’ve had completely full houses for each of the showings,” shared Courtney Caldwell, Ashland Theatre Executive Director. “We’re seeing a lot of new families that haven’t visited the Theatre before, as well as good number of local families that are happy to have indoor activities during the summer heat. There have been lots of grateful parents thanking us for the opportunity.”

The program’s appeal extends beyond young families. Randolph-Macon College students staying on campus over the summer have also taken advantage of the free films.

“As an RMC student staying on campus over the summer, I’m always looking for cost-free activities to do in the area,” shared Addison Browell, rising senior at Randolph-Macon. “Free Movie Mondays are a great way for me to interact with the Ashland community more while being a college student on a budget!”

To further celebrate the partnership, REC employees will be on-site at the August 4 showings at both 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to greet families and hand out the Cooperative’s signature yellow hard hats to children.

“Partnerships like this one reflect what REC stands for — investing in the people and places we serve,” added Hollins. “We’re honored to help make summer a little brighter for families in Ashland.”
