REC Responds to Storm-Related Outages
Monday | May 27, 2024

REC crews, contractors and field teams continue to make repairs and restore service as quickly and safely as they can after powerful storms with gusty winds and torrential downpours roared through much of Virginia last night.

As of 11 a.m., about 3,000 members remained without power as a result of nearly 100 separate outage events. Many of those outage locations involve only a few members each, and some will require significant repairs and pole replacements, which can take multiple hours to complete.

As a result, some power outages will continue into Tuesday.

Key points to keep in mind:

  • The National Weather Service warns that additional storms are possible today.
  • Combined with the already-saturated ground, the additional rain and wind could cause trees to tumble onto power lines. As a result, additional outages are possible.
  • REC has plenty of materials such as poles, wires and transformers that might be needed to make repairs.
  • All available line crews, tree contractors and other critical teams were on standby and are now responding to outage locations.
  • REC’s Dispatch Center is fully staffed and, as always, will work around the clock to ensure the safe and efficient movement of crews.
  • Critical safety reminder: Always stay well clear of any downed power line or anything that might be in contact with the power line. Report any downed lines to REC or call 911.
  • REC’s members are encouraged to bookmark the online Outage Center to track outage restoration: myrec.coop/outagecenter
  • To report an outage, members can visit myrec.coop/out, use the MyREC SmartHub app or text OUT to 63273.
