Youth Tour

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative's (REC) Youth Tour gives high school juniors an opportunity to learn leadership skills, hang out with peers from across the United States and Virginia - and have fun while doing it.

Participants of the 2023 Youth Tour had a fun and jam-packed trip to Washington D.C. where they learned about the electric cooperative industry, met with local legislators, toured the United States Capitol, and had fun attending a Washington Nationals baseball game, a play at the Kennedy Center and much more.

Interested in becoming a lineman, Mark Sprouse, a Louisa County High School student, enjoyed learning about cooperatives and connecting with other students. “I learned pretty quick that there are cooperatives everywhere,” he said. “Between the bus rides and all of the activities, I’ve made a lot of new friends from other Virginia and Maryland cooperatives.”

How Youth Tour Started: Youth Tour was inspired by Sen. Lyndon Baines Johnson when he addressed the NRECA Annual Meeting in 1957. The senator and future president declared, "If one thing goes out of this meeting, it will be sending youngsters to the national capital where they can actually see what the flag stands for and represents."
